Registred Nurses’ Experiences of Communication with Patients after the Transition Conversation: An interview study

Abstract [en]

Purpose: High demands is placed on the nurses in the communication with patients when the patients' treatment changes from curative to palliative intention. The communication between a nurse and a patient is a central part in nursing and it is of great importance it works. The study aims to illustrate the registered nurse’s experiences of communicating with a patient after they have been through a transition conversation.

Method: Six registered nurses from both haematology and oncology wards at a hospital in southern Sweden were interviewed. The data were analysed using content analysis. 

Result: Three themes with total eight categories was identified: RNs were excluded from the TC, which included the impact it had on the following communication and the dialogue between RNs and patient afterwards. The second theme was importance of communication where the experience of following- up patients, support patients and having existential conversations were highlighted. The last theme the RNs strategies in the communication included experience of using tools and the need of more education.

Conclusion: RNs in today’s healthcare needs education to be able to provide the care and the communication that the patients asked for and obligated to get, regarding support and information. In the result RNs suggest and tells their strategies in the communication with patients, which could help themselves but also RNs in other wards. More research is requested according to the aim.
