The effects of tourism in Torekov : - from a municipal and a citizen perspecitve (English)
Abstract [en]

During our bachelor's degree we learned about, among other things, public spaces, municipal planning and the city's sustainable development. The essay aims to investigate how the effects of tourism affect the small town of Torekov, located in southern Sweden. We intend to analyze what creates a tourist destination and how different subjective interpretations shape the place's identity. What impact does tourism have on the development of the town from a municipal and a citizen perspective? During the process, both municipal officials and local residents have given their perspective on tourism in Torekov. This is to create an overall picture of the tourist phenomenon in Torekov. After collecting empirical data through a case study by Torekov in the form of interviews, we reflected on a general dissatisfaction among local residents linked to tourism. The municipality also experienced difficulties in offering municipal services, such as schools and libraries, as the permanent population is getting older, and also declining. Population reduction in Torekov is an effect of the sale of properties at high prices, which are intended for summer houses. The sale of properties, which will then be used as holiday homes, can be considered as a sale of the resort. The resort is "bought" by capital-rich summer guests who only spend the summer months in their freehold homes, which creates a displacing effect. The people who want to live in the town permanently may not be able to afford it as housing prices increase. During the course of the study, curiosity develops about measures of the problem. Old fishing villages tend to be bought up by capital-rich people, which contributes to a less dynamic countryside during the winter period.
