Women are underrepresented in the IT-industry in Sweden, and it all starts with education where only a few women choose a further education within IT. This thesis aims to study why only a few women choose technical education and what factors may come into play. Furthermore, this thesis aims to study the measures that are being taken by e.g. recommendations from the state and private actors to increase the number of female developers and engineers in Sweden, and examine platforms' impact on women's choices of education and professions within IT. With the help of documentary research, the authors have collected information that indicates that gender stereotypes and discrimination play a dominant role in why women tend to choose other careers over a field in IT. In combination with research and interviews, with a tool in the form of a programming app, the authors have discovered a pattern which suggests that technology in the form of early education and technical solutions can make women feel more secure in choosing a career in IT. Role models in the form of platforms also proved to be an important tool for getting women to stay in the industry.
