A Retrospective Journal Study About Incidence of Late Cancellations and Absenteeism and Association with Dental Health in Child and Adolescent Dental Care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim: Study the incidence of late cancellations and absenteeism and identify potential connection between caries incidence with absenteeism and the included variables in the risk assessment (medical risk, caries risk, periodontal risk, social risk and erosion risk) and what it can lead to current dental health in 13- to 19-year-olds at the Children’s Dental Clinic at the Faculty of Odontology (ABUT), Malmö University.

Material & method: A retrospective journal study. The material consisted of dental records belonging to children and young people born in 1999-2005 and listed at the Children’s Dental Clinic at the Faculty of Odontology (ABUT), Malmö University in 2019.

A protocol was used to collect data from dental records where each patient was assigned a code.

Patients who left late cancellations or were absent were compared with the patients who visited dental care regularly.

Results: A total of 357 patients were included. The study showed that 252 (70,6%) did not have late cancellations or absenteeism noticed in their dental records. The corresponding figure for those who had late cancellations or absenteeism noticed in their dental records was 105 (29,4 %), of which 73 (69,5 %) of these patients showed new caries in their most recent clinical examination, remaining 32 patients (30,4 %) showed no caries. A significant difference was also found between those who were absent and those who were not absent. The difference was statistically significant (p=0,002)

Conclusion: Patients who are absent get more new caries compared to the patients who regularly visit the dental care. Patients who are in the high-risk group for caries, periodontal, medical and social risk do not attend or leave late cancellations more often than the patients who are in the low respectively middle risk group within the same risk group.
