Immigration detention is widely used in Greece and is only seeing an increase, especially withexisting open facilities being transformed into closed detention centres. This thesis aims to shedlight on the ways in which Greek politicians portray immigration detention in Greece in mediadiscourse by answering the following research question: How is immigration detention in Greeceportrayed by Greek politicians? This study employs Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive critical discourseanalysis and the concepts of hospitality (Filoxenia in Greek), “othering” and deterrence to breakdown statements and quotes of Greek politicians around the issue of detaining irregularizedmigrants. The analysis suggests that despite the use of language related to hospitality, Greekpoliticians see detention as a solution providing more control and safety to their citizens, not the“Other” while simultaneously acting as a deterrent. This study contributes to the existing literatureby providing a critical, constructivist study of hospitality, othering and deterrence in the context ofimmigration detention in Greece.
