Drag queens - Constructors of femininity? : An image analysis of 8 drag queens on Instagram (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this bachelor thesis, the relationship between 8 drag queens and their social media platforms is examined and analyzed. The study aims at trying to understand how the drag queens construct a heteronormative feniminity through portrayals of the self which are published on the social media platform "Instagram". Furthermore, the study lifts the question of how and why these portrayals can be seen as stereotypically feminine.

The thesis is partly based on earlier feministic studies in which the question of whether or not drag queens are portraying a degrading image of classic femininity is lifted. Studies preformed within the queer spectrum have also been analysed and examined.

Through the method of semiotic image analysis a result can be seen regarding how the use of makeup, hair styles and clothes within the drag community reflect a portrayal of womanhood that correlates with the stereotypical portrayal of women. The results further indicate a high degree of stereotypification in the images, which can be understood as a social parody regarding the societal expectations of how a woman "should" look.
