This paper lifts the question about school counselor’s education and involvement regarding sexual education. The subject is relevant at this moment in time because the Swedish government recently passed a new subject plan regarding sexual education. A qualified research study is conducted amongst 13 schools in Malmö, Sweden. The study shows that a convincing majority of the interviewed counselors think they have enough knowledge to meet the student and any questions they might have regarding the subject and the new changes.
The study also shows that the counselors have different views on the teachers, who are responsible for the sexual education, competence regarding the subject. There are loads of different aspects to lift within the area of sexual education that school counselors have a higher understanding of. Moralization, heteronormative views and cultural differences are some of the things that need extra attention when teaching youth about sex, consent and relationships. The authors of this paper make the deduction that the school counselor at least should partake in the sexual education as this most likely will give the youth a deeper and more extensive sexual education.
