This Degree Project in Communication for Development examines the collaboration between the United Nations (UN) in Tanzania and Tanzania Editors’ Forum (TEF). The purpose is to understand how media professionals see the collaboration and what its impact on individual journalists, the media landscape and media independence is.
The concepts of Media for Development and Media Development are applied to the Tanzanian context, and combined with concept of Media Capture to provide a relevant theoretical framework.
The results show that both the UN and the interviewed media professionals view media in Tanzania first and foremost as a vehicle to achieve various development targets. They also show that in a challenging media landscape, the media content is likely to be not only decided by media professionals, but also by other actors with influence and funds.
