The housing stock built between 1960 and 1975 in Sweden is in need of extensive renovation. Housing renovation can be complicated for project managers. Compared to renovations of other types of properties, housing renovations can become complex processes due to tenants may need to remain in their homes during the renovation process. A renovation process can be described as a project and aims to create a product, fulfill a result or provide a service within a specific financial framework/timeframe. Within each project, there are a number of stakeholders with different requirements, needs and expectations, which can affect the project's implementation.

This qualitative study examines how real estate companies' project managers handle tenants in renovation projects of residential properties. The study also highlights the difficulties and dilemmas that project managers are exposed to and other stakeholders that are involved, in addition to the tenants. The study's interview questions have been developed through a deductive approach. The empirical section is based on semi-structured interviews that are answered by four project managers.

Several conclusions are observed. It appears that there are a number of stakeholders, in addition to the tenants, both internally and externally that project managers need to take into account. The respondents value the tenants, when they get informed and are involved. The respondents use both one-way and two-way communication. Through housing meetings, project managers become aware of tenants' specific needs and expectations, which serves as a stakeholder analysis. Finally, it is observed that project managers encounter challenges as tenants' needs and interests clash with project goals.
