The forgotten elders : Alcohol abuse and social exclusion (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

Background: Today`s elderly have a higher use of alcohol consumption. The group as a whole, especially the group abusing alcohol at a higher than normal rate, is at large forgotten by society. In a time where society is constantly evolving, seen from a technical view, elders often fall behind due to lack of understanding and skill. Exclusion and isolation can often result in a heightened misuse of alcohol. Aim: The purpose of this essay is to highlight the alcohol abuse among elders in relation to social exclusion. Furthermore, we wish to expose the differences between men and women. Questions: How does alcolhol abuse and social exclusion interact, and which gender differences there are? Method: A systematic literature study has been conducted to create an overview of existing research material in this field. Result: Our findings were that there is a connection between alcohol abuse and social exclusion among the elderly. We also found that alcohol abuse and social exclusion can affect each other mutually.  We also found a marked difference between genders, depending in regards to social support and exclusion. Discussion: Our study shows a clear connection between social exclusion and alcohol misuse among the elderly. Within this connection there were factors which could either improve or worsen the situation for the group as a whole. Gender stereotypes were found to be a factor in worsening the connection between alcohol misuse and social exclusion.
