Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka vad offentlig konst berättar om Malmö i allmänhet och om Malmös innerstadsmiljö respektive ytterstadsmiljö i synnerhet, med utgångspunkt i teori om att stadsidentitet kan konstrueras med hjälp av offentlig konst. För att uppnå uppsatsens syfte görs ett urval om 30 konstverk i Malmö som genomgår en konstteoretisk analys baserad på Erwin Panofskys ikonologiska trestegsmodell, varpå tematiska skillnader mellan den offentliga konsten i innerstadsmiljö och ytterstadsmiljö identifieras och diskuteras utifrån tre ingångar: motiv och symbolik, den rumsliga situationen och den tilltänkta betraktaren. Studien visar att det finns tematiska skillnader i urvalet av offentlig konst i Malmös olika miljöer, och att miljöernas olikheter speglas i den offentliga konsten.

This thesis explores what public art in Malmö says about the city in general and, more specifically, what it tells about the inner- and outer city areas in Malmö. The article uses a theory of how the identity of an area can be constructed using public art. Thirty pieces of art in Malmö were collected and analysed according to critical art theory and Erwin Panofsky’s three levels of interpretation to find thematic differences between public art in inner- versus outer-city areas. These thematic differences were identified and discussed from three perspectives: motive and symbolism, the spatial context, and the constructed observer narrative. The study suggests that there is a difference between art in the inner- and outer city that perpetuates and reinforces ideas about differences in these spaces.
