Adolescents' everyday challenges related to the body : An interview study within the research project ALiCE (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Reports show that adolescents’ self-reported mental illness is increasing. However, research shows that the symptoms of mental illness can instead be seen as a result of everyday challenges where the body is a component. Body image and body ideals have been shown to affect adolescents’ health in many respects. Aim: To illustrate adolescents’ description of everyday challenges related to body image and body ideal. Method: The study had a qualitative approach with previous collected data from the research project ALiCE. 15 focus group interviews with adolescents were included and analysed using content analysis. Result: The results were categorized into three main categories: ‘Being exposed to body ideals’, ‘Living up to body ideals’ and ‘Dealing with negative body image’ with associated subcategories. The adolescents described everyday challenges linked to being exposed to body ideals from their immediate environment or from the media. The demand living up to the body ideal could lead to reduced well-being, eating disorders and being bullied. The adolescents also presented challenges such as seeking support, knowledge and self-confidence when dealing with negative body image. Conclusion: According to the study, body ideal and body perception are significant challenges in everyday lives of adolescents. Their perspective can result in a targeted intervention that promotes health and with a health-promoting approach, the school nurse can capture adolescents in their everyday lives.
