Autism- The Wellbeing of Siblings : A Literature Study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze, based on autobiographies and biographies, how children are affected by growing up with a sibling who has been diagnosed with autism. The thesis is based on qualitative methods and consists of an analysis of five biographies in this area. The issues that I address are how the siblings experience their everyday life, the relationship they have with their sibling with autism, and the strategies they use in their everyday life. I have answered these questions by using Lazarus' coping theory and Antonovsky's sense of coherence’ theory and I also draw on existing research. The thesis shows that the siblings do experience joy but also experience considerable hardships in their everyday lives. These result have led to an understanding of the importance of community efforts to help these families.
