Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The reason for students' difficulties with problem solving is that they are not given the right conditions to develop their understanding of mathematical terms and communication skills at school. By giving students the opportunity to collaborate on problem solving, by discussing challenging mathematical problems in a group, all mathematical skills can be developed. When the students work with the same mathematical problem and discuss their different solutions with each other, they find that there is some alternative way of looking at the problem. Students are given the opportunity to develop their communication and reasoning skills, as well as to develop their numeracy and conceptual understanding. This is an empirical study that focuses on different teaching methods used by teachers in problem solving. The study uses qualitative survey method in the form of semi-structured interview. The result is based on interviews with five teachers who teach mathematics for grades 4-6 in the Swedish school. The result shows that teachers who use different communication-development problem-solving methods give students the conditions to use each other's way of thinking and ideas as shared resources.
