The Swedish school system has recently experienced an increase in newly arrived students. These students often lack knowledge in several school subjects, however, one which has not been explored thoroughly is their English education. Our experience is that these students often lack the English skills which they will need to be able to thrive and participate in Swedish society. In this synthesis we have examined the research on the experiences of both the students and teachers with regards to newly arrived students and English studies. The background and theories for this project heavily rely upon Engelsk språkdidaktik by Bo Lundahl, as well as official guidelines from Skolverket. The studies included focus on both the school situation for newly arrived students as well as English studies in general. From the research we have gathered we can see that there is general lack of resources, and that both the students and the schools in general focus on learning and teaching Swedish, sometimes to the detriment of English. This area is quite new and still requires further research.
