The purpose of this essay is to determine what interest pupils have regarding science in school and what affects their interest. The text also aims to determine what ideas teachers have regarding pupil interest. Furthermore, the purpose is to compare the pupils’ thoughts on interest and the teachers’ ideas about pupil interest. The method of obtaining material for this study was mainly through qualitative interviews conducted with both pupils and teachers. The study also included a quantitative portion in the form of a questionnaire that was given to the interviewed pupils. The results presented in the text shows that pupils have different interests regarding different topics and work methods. It also shows that pupil interest often coincides with their ability to relate to the topic and their ability to understand it. The teachers’ ideas presented in the text shows that experiments, the human body and liquids were some of the topics that pupils find more interesting. It indicates that interest is a result of their ability to relate to the content and their previous understanding of it. The work method was also indicated as a possible reason for interest/disinterest.
