This dissertation is a qualitative research study on the criteria for selecting English textbooks. Our research is based on interviews with four teachers at an upper secondary school. The informants stated that one reason for not conducting a more thorough evaluation was that they found it too time-consuming. Another reason was that materials evaluation was an unknown concept to them. The results of our investigation illustrate that the school’s evaluation procedure has improved over the years. However, the teachers at the school would benefit from developing their evaluation strategy. The most important criterion to consider in the selection is, according to the teachers, interesting and relevant texts that the students can relate to.
