Abstract [en]
The purpose of this research summary has been to investigate how upper secondary citizenship education contributes to fulfilling the school’s mission to create active citizens. Mainly, the sources used in this research summary has been found in data bases such as LIBSEARCH and ERIC. Furthermore, the Swedish curriculum and other regulatory documents have been used throughout the summary. Results show that, while Swedish teenager’s overall political interest are increasing, their interest in and trust in the established political parties is decreasing. Upper secondary citizenship education has a tendency to focus heavily on these aspects of political participation, and therefore fails to engage students and provide them with the political efficacy they need to become active members of society. In the long run, this could pose a serious issue for our democratic society, if the citizens are uninterested or distrust the political system that is designed to work for them. In summary, the conclusion is that there are issues with the effectiveness of the citizenship education in upper secondary schools, and its’ effect on teenager’s political efficacy. There is also a need for further research regarding how the citizenship education can be modified to help prevent these issues.
