Abstract [en]

This research synthesis explores Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and why teachers should implement it when teaching English as a Second Language in order to enhance learners’ reading comprehension and vocabulary building. Based on English as a second language (ESL) and CALL, scholarly journals were reviewed and studied in order to find ideas and opinions about CALL and how it should be used to teach English as a second language with these goals in mind. It was found that several sources find CALL useful and helpful in improving reading and vocabulary for students, however, some seem to find the technology difficult to master and thus difficult to teach. The final answer to our research question is that CALL is useful if the knowledge of how to operate it is accessible. CALL has several advantagepoints, such as being able to store information as well as create new study materials, specialized for individual students and learning goals. The downsides to implementing CALL may be that it proves somewhat difficult for some to master.
