Syftet med arbetet har varit att undersöka på vilket sätt historia brukas och förmedlas inom svensk samtida hiphop och till vilka syften och funktion. Utifrån tre olika metoder för textanalys och vidare med historiedidaktiska teorier har jag genomfört en litteraturanalys av åtta stycken låttexter från välkända artister på den svenska scenen. Min teoretiska utgångspunkt för arbetet har jag i Peter Aronssons påstående att ”någon berättar något för någon annan av en anledning”. Hiphopens grund ligger i berättelsen och har en tradition av att behandla politiska frågor. Historia av olika slag blir i detta sammanhang ett viktigt verktyg för att förmedla en bild av ett aktuellt ämne eller sig själv. Texterna har ett övervägande syfte att bearbeta tankar, erfarenheter och känslor hos producenten oavsett vilken sorts berättelse som berättas. Genom att berätta för någon annan berättar man också för sig själv. Syftet kan samtidigt vara att få fram en specifik politisk fråga i det offentliga samtalet och verka för en förändring av rådande normer och samhällsklimat. Jag har även intervjuat två medlemmar ur gruppen Looptroop Rockers för att diskutera historiebruk ur en textförfattares perspektiv.

The aim of the paper is to examine how history is used and communicated in Swedish contemporary hip-hop and to what purpose and function. Based on three different methods of text analysis together with history didactic theories, I conducted an analysis of eight lyrics from well-known artists on the Swedish hip-hop scene. The theoretical standpoint of the paper is Peter Aronsson’s assertion that “someone is telling someone else something for a reason”. The foundation of hip-hop lies in the narrative, and there is a tradition of discussing political issues. In this context, various kinds of historical events become an important tool to convey an image of a current topic or of the artists themselves. No matter what story is told, the lyrics main purpose is to process the author’s thoughts, experiences and feelings. By telling someone else you also tell yourself. At the same time, the purpose may also be to bring a specific political issue to public discussion or to promote a change in prevailing norms and social climate. I have also interviewed two of the members of the group Looptroop Rockers to discuss the use of history from a songwriters point of view.
