Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att belysa hur socialsekreterare arbetar för att göra barn mer delaktiga i beslut och processer som rör dem. Föräldraperspektivet kan i många fall prioriteras över barnperspektivet och barnet kan lätt glömmas bort. Därför har vi valt att undersöka vilka faktorer som kan orsaka att barns delaktighet minskar eller ökar. Vi har genomfört en litteraturstudie genom att läsa flera vetenskapliga artiklar, avhandlingar och böcker.Vi har valt att analysera materialet utifrån kommunikationsteorin. Resultatet visar på att det finns en brist i barns deltagande inom socialtjänstens arbete. Enligt lagstiftning har barn rätt att komma till tals och att få relevant information. Dock visar resultatet att barn inte uppmärksammas tillräckligt. Svårigheterna kan ligga på ett makroperspektiv såsom tidspress och begränsade material. Det kan det även ligga på ett mikroperspektiv såsom socialsekreterares uppfattning av olika begrepp och val av kommunikationsstilar. Dock finns det även många möjligheter som underlättar barns delaktighet. Det kan exempelvis handla om olika metoder som man använder under samtal så som bilder, rollspel eller kort. Barnkonventionen har även hjälpt att öka barnets delaktighet, dock finns det fortfarande många brister som kvarstår.

The purpose of this essay has been to highlight how social workers work to make children more involved in decisions and processes that affect them. In many cases, the parent's perspective can be prioritized over the child's perspective and the child can easily be forgotten. Therefore, we have chosen to investigate which factors may increase as well as reduce the participation of children. We have implemented a literature study based on researches by reading several scientific articles, thesis and books. We have chosen to analyze the material on the basis of communication theory. The results show that there is a lack of children's participation in social work. By law, children have the right to speak and to receive relevant information. However, the results uncovered that children are not getting enough attention. The difficulties may lie on a macro perspective such as time pressure and limited materials. It may also lie on the micro-perspective such as social workers' perception of different concepts and choices of communication styles. However, there are also many opportunities that facilitate children's participation. It could be for example about various methods used during conversations such as pictures, role-playing games or cards. The convention on the rights of the child has also helped to increase the child's participation, however there are still many deficiencies that remain.
