Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: It is becoming more common with suicide and the risk of being exposed to a patient's suicide is something health professionals cannot ignore. According to the National Centre for suicide research and prevention of mental illness, 1523 committed suicide in 2012. Most suicide is characterized by chaos and despair and for those who commit suicide it seems as if the plot is rational because their thought paths locked up. When suicide happens suddenly, it is important among both families and health professionals to be helped with processing the incidence. Aim: The aim of the study was to shed light on the experiences of health professionals after patient's suicide. Method: A general literature review consisting of 12 scientific articles with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. Results: The results that emerged showed experiences of health professionals through emotional reactions such as shock, anger, and sadness. The need for support from colleagues and relatives was a part of the process. Knowledge/information proved to be desirable among staff who have experienced a suicide. A patient's suicide turned out to affect the future care of new patients. Conclusion: As a suicide raises many strong and unexpected emotions, we believe it is important that this knowledge is conveyed in nursing and other professions undergraduate.
