Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Nursing and role as a nurse are two conceptions hard to define. There is a need for increased knowledge in this area because men are getting more common in nursing. The purpose of this study was to increase the knowledge in how male nurses experience their role as nurses. To obtain answers, questions about nursing as meaning and how they experienced the process of growing in their role, were asked. The study has a qualitative research approach and was carried out through interviews with four male, professional nurses on fulltime-care-wards. After analysing the material the results were presented in three themes: The essence of nursing, The process of growing in the role as a nurse and finally, Gender. Nursing was seen upon, as a collection of all tasks that nurses have. They had all noticed that they had grown in their role. They had not experienced any differences in male versus female nurses in the essence of nursing. They thought it was individual, but that there could be a difference.
