Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The immigration to Sweden is increasing. Diabetes is globally the biggest public health problem. Life expectancy increases, thus also within the group of immigrated patients with diabetes. The support and self-management when having diabetes is crucial for the patient's continued disease development and health. Purpose: The purpose of this literature study was to describe the immigrated patient’s experiences and perception of the support on selfmanagement when having diabetes. Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach based on the results of eleven scientific articles. Results: The study showed that the support for self-management in immigrant patients was insufficient. The following categories were analyzed; The barriers to selfmanagement, The importance of the family and The experience of the meeting with the nurse. Conclusion: Education for both the patient and the patient's family has emerged as a basic prerequisite for self-care support. The result also showed that patients lacked a more person-centered care where the nurse made them more involved in their own care.
