Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study is to analyze and describe social work students’ views on the future occupational role. Empirically the study is based on interviews with five students in different grades on the University of Malmö. The results of previous studies show that the skills training of social work students could be further developed and that it is desirable with more internship in the education. It also shows that the importance of field skills is of great importance and the practical learning must not be overshadowed by the academy. My conclusion about the views of the students interviewed in this study is that they want more preparatory education and, to a large extent, do not feel prepared to enter the vocational role of social work. They need more time and space for reflection in order to develop their critical approach in the profession. There is also an uncertainty among the students in how they can learn to handle their own feelings before entering the professional role. The interviews were mainly analysed with the theory of occupational socialization and emotional dissonance, but also with the meaning of doxa in a field. Furthermore, I have noticed that the students’ thoughts pervade an empathetic approach to emotions and the treatment of people in vulnerable situations. The title of the essay "It's important to feel with people, but not for them" also reflects this approach that is so important in the performance of social work.
