The purpose of this empirical study was to investigate if stress exists among nurses, and if it exists how do they experience it and how do they cope whit it. The nurses also got to define the word stress. Karasek and Theorells demandcontrollmodell were used as a theoretical framework. The result of the study answers our research questions and gives us a good insight how the nurses experience stress and how they cope with it. The result shows that 56 of 60 nurses indicated that they experience medium to high level of stress a couple of days a week or more often and that it affects their work. Since not many superiors offers their nurses any stress coping many nurses have to handle their stress on their own. Most of them define stress as something negative were they no longer have any control over the situation.

Syftet med denna empiriska studie var att undersöka om det förelåg stress, hur den i sådana fall upplevs och hanteras av sjuksköterskorna. Sjuksköterskorna fick även själva definiera begreppet stress. Karasek och Theorells kravkontrollmodell har använts som teoretisk referensram. Studiens resultat svarar på våra frågeställningar och ger en god insikt i sjuksköterskornas syn på och hantering av stress. Resultatet visade att 56 av de 60 sjuksköterskorna angav att de upplever måttlig till hög stress från några gånger i veckan till varje dag, samt att detta påverkar deras arbete. Eftersom stresshantering inte förekommer på så många avdelningar tvingas sjuksköterskorna själva hantera sin stress. De flesta definierar stress som något negativt där de inte längre har kontroll över situationen.
