Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Treatment of elderly patients is an interesting area since not that much research has been done within the subject. However treatment is difficult to define which makes research in the area hard. The aim of this study was to describe the elderlys positive and negative patient experiences of the nurses’ treatment in a hospital- and nursing care setting. Three questions were to be answered: How does the nurse act in her treatment of older patients? How do older patients experience this meeting? What is it in the meeting that decides if the experience is perceived as positive or negative? The method chosen was literature review with 10 qualitative articles as a basis for the results. The theoretical frame of reference is Kari Martinsen’s theory of caring. In the results nine themes emerged that seemed to be important for patients in the relationship with nurses and their treatment. They were nurses’ behaviour, positive experiences of nurses, negative experiences of nurses, respect and integrity, communication, autonomy, needs, empathy and trust and finally information. The conclusion is that the subject is complex. However nurses mostly treat elderly patients well.
