Syftet med denna kvalitativa studie var att belysa och undersöka hur ensamhetskänslor hos äldre kommer till uttryck i äldreomsorgen från biståndshandläggarnas och hemtjänstpersonalens perspektiv. I studien redogörs det för olika bakomliggande orsaker och konsekvenser av känslor av ensamhet bland äldre. Det redogörs även för relevanta begrepp och aktuell statistik över de äldres situation och hälsa i samhället. Uppsatsens empiriska material bygger på en kvalitativ ansats i form av åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer med biståndshandläggare och hemtjänstpersonal inom Skåne län. Efter en djup bearbetning och analys av vårt insamlade material framkom det relevanta teoretiska perspektiv och synsätt. Vi fördjupade oss i bemötandets etik, empati/sympati samt aktivitetsteorin som är centrala delar i vår studies ämne och som har hjälpt oss att förstå vårt forskningsmaterial. Några av studiens slutsatser är: 1) att känslor av ensamhet hos äldre uppfattas som en subjektiv och mångfacetterad känsla av både biståndshandläggare och hemtjänstpersonal. 2) att ensamhetskänslor hos äldre är, enligt professionerna, ett välkänt fenomen och något som beaktas i arbetet med de äldre. 3) att enligt professionerna är bemötandet gentemot den äldre av stor betydelse för att den äldre ska uppleva sig som värdefull och därmed också öka sitt välbefinnande. 4) att professionerna för många äldre är den enda sociala kontakten vissa äldre har. 5) att aktiviteter som har sociala inslag och som fångar upp varje individs behov och intressen också bidrar till hälsofrämjande faktorer. 6) ensamheten kan både vara en orsak till och en konsekvens av depression eller psykisk ohälsa vilket kan få allvarliga konsekvenser för de äldre.

This qualitative study aims to enlighten and review how feelings of loneliness among our elderly are being expressed from the perspective of social workers in authority and home help caregivers. The study portrays various underlying causes and consequences of feelings of loneliness among the elderly. It also describes relevant concepts and current statistics on the situation and health of the elderly in society. The material was built on a qualitative approach of eight semi-structured interviews with social workers in authority and home help caregivers within Skåne county. After a methodological process and an analysis of our material, particular theoretical perspectives emerged. The theoretical perspectives are: ethics in personal treatment, empathy/sympathy and activity theory. These theories are central for the analysis and the theories have helped us to understand the research material. Some of our conclusions are: 1) feelings of loneliness among elderly was by the social workers in authority and home help caregivers seen as a multifaceted and subjective feeling. 2) feelings of loneliness among elderly according to the social workers in authority and home help caregivers are a well-known phenomenon and something they take into consideration in their work with the elderly. 3) according to the social workers in authority and home help caregiver’s, personal treatment towards the elderly is of importance to make the elderly feel worthful and thereby is personal treatment increasing their wellbeing. 4) for many elderlies the social workers in authority and home help caregivers, especially the home help caregivers, are the only social contact they have. 5) activity with social influences can catch the elderlies needs and interests and also contribute to factors that improve the elderlies health in a positive direction. 6) loneliness can be either a causal factor or a consequence of depression or mental illness which can lead to serious concequenses for the elderlies.
