Abstract [en]

Jansson, T. Social police-work. A qualitative study of the police and its work with and against drug abuse. Degree project in Social work. 15 Credits. Malmö University. Faculty of Health and Society, Departement of Social work, 2019. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate the part that police plays in the work with and surrounding drug abuse. In Sweden the police plays a big part of the work against drug abuse since it's illegal in Sweden to use, not only to possess, any kind of illegal drug. The empirical material of the essay is based on four qualitative interviews with four different kinds of police officers. The interviews are based on the purpose of the essay with questions aiming to get every subjects own perspective on their work. The theoritical premise for the study is Goffmans theory about stigma and Foucaults theory about panopticism. The result showed that the police has a strong consensus regarding drugs and drug abuse. They want more to be done about drugs and drug abuse and they find it hard to help people with the current social system. They also think that the current school-system is unfavourable for those who are bad at certain subjects. The police mostly work to control and punish drug abuse, that way they try to scare people of drugs. My conclusions are that we as social workers and they as police officers work towards the same goal, we want to help people stop doing drugs, we just have different approaches and could learn from eachother.
