Socionomkonsulter, socionomer som hyrs ut av konsultföretag till framförallt kommuner, har blivit en vanligt förekommande företeelse på socialkontor runt om i landet. Denna uppsats frågar sig inte enbart varför socionomer väljer att bli konsulter utan analyserar socionomkonsulternas användning av konsultrollen som en professionell strävan med vilken de tar avstånd ifrån olika sätt att organisera det sociala arbetet i kommunen. Socionomkonsulten har en oviss hemhörighet då de pendlar mellan konsultföretaget och kommunen, en pendling som också sker mellan offentligt och privat. På så sätt kan socionomkonsulterna sägas befolka ett typ av gränsland. Det är detta gränsland som undersöks i denna uppsats i vilken fem stycken socionomkonsulters intervjuutsagor behandlats och analyseras med hjälp av en diskursanalytiskt inspirerad metod och teori. Vad avgränsar sig socionomkonsulterna mot? Vilka professionella värden framhåller de som en del av konsultrollen? Vad konstituerar socionomkonsulternas gränsland? För att svara på dessa frågor analyseras socionomkonsulternas berättelser även med hjälp av en teori om två olika idealtypiska sätt att se på professioner, yrkes- och organisationsprofessionalism (Evetts 2010). En av uppsatsens slutsatser är att socionomkonsulternas val att bli konsulter kan tolkas som en reaktion mot två oförenliga krav vilka kopplas till de två idealtyperna. Ett krav att närvara i kollegiet genom gemensamma möten och utbildningar och ett krav att självständigt utföra ett överbelastande utredningsarbete.

Social worker consultants, that is social workers hired by municipal authorities from different consultancies, has become a common phenomenon in social offices all over Sweden. The purpose of this thesis does not however limit itself to the question as why social workers prefer to become consultants, but rather how they make use of their capacity as consults in a professional quest whereby they distances themselves from the ways social works are organized and handled by local governments. The home-about of social worker consultants is uncertain, as they swing between consultancies and local governments; a swinging between public and private sectors. Hence, one might conclude that the social consultants inhabits a “border land” of a sort. This paper is a survey of this “border land”, made through analyzing, with the help of a discourse analytically-inspired method, the statements of five social consultants: In relation to what do they define themselves? What are the professional values they emphasize? What constitutes this “border land” of the social consultants? In order to derive an answer into these questions, their statements are analyzed in the light of one particular theory, referring to two typical ideals of viewing professionalism: occupational- and organizational (Evetts, 2010). One of the conclusions made, is the possibility that the social workers choice of becoming merely a consultant is in fact a reaction against mutual conflicts between respective types of ideals with incompatible demands
