Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis has been to inquire into social workers experiences, of their working conditions in relationship to compulsory care for children according to the Act on Special Provisions on the Care of Young People. The essay is of a qualitative nature. The empirical data was collected through seven qualitative interviews with social workers from the field. Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective and Arlie Hochschild’s theory about emotional labour have been used to analyze and decipher the thesis results. The thesis empirical material demonstrates that social worker experience a row of requirements in their work. These requirements play out in characteristics that is expected from the social worker. These characteristics include the ability to; be empathic, be patient, flexible and adaptable. The most mentioned characteristic is that the social workers must have a low-impact approach. Further social workers experience that there is an increased documentation and formal requirement during compulsory care. There are high demands on the language that must be correct and address both politicians and lawyers. These requirements led to stress-related emotions according to the social workers. To fulfill these requirements social workers put on a role, that qualifies them for their job. To unload these stresses social workers choose to communicate with each other and their bosses, and therewith vent out their feelings to ensure an adecvate and professional role.
