Abstract [sv]

Metod: I denna semi-strukturerade intervjustudie deltog 14 skolsköterskor.

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness is increasing among school aged children and youth. School nurses have been identified as a profession with opportunities to work preventively within this field. However, there is a lack of guidelines regarding how preventive work should be executed by this profession. Aim: The aim was to illuminate school nurses experiences of preventive work against mental illness among pupils in elementary school. Method: In this semi-structured interview study 14 school nurses participated. The method of analysis that was applied was thematic content analysis with an inductive approach. Result: The school nurses reported that they worked preventively against mental illness in a variety of ways. These ways of working were partly differentiated and the extent to which preventive work could be prioritized among the school nurses varied. The main reason for these variations in ways of working and prioritizing was considered to be caused by the lack of explicit guidelines regarding how the preventive work should be conducted. The results were gathered in four categories: The school nurses’ tools in the preventive work, The importance of collaboration, Existing challenges and Future needs. Conclusion: Although the school nurses execute a comprehensive preventive work against mental illness, the work needs to be made more visible and clarified. Preventive work could thereby further be developed and meet the requirements that the increasing prevalence of mental illness demands.
