Bakgrund: Yrket sjuksköterska har ur ett historiskt perspektiv setts som något feminint där professionen kopplats till det kvinnliga könet. När fler män började utbilda sig till sjuksköterskor uppstod det nya situationer som inte hade förekommit sedan tidigare när det endast var kvinnliga sjuksköterskor som arbetade inom yrket. Idag räknas manliga sjuksköterskor som en minoritet då de i Sverige endast består av 12 procent. Syfte: Syftet är att undersöka litteraturen kring manliga sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att arbeta inom ett kvinnodominerat yrke. Metod: En systematisk litteraturöversikt har använts med en kvalitativ ansats där 14 studier har valts. Studierna hittades genom databaserna Cinahl och Pubmed och har granskats utifrån en granskningsmall samt analyserats utifrån en metasyntes. Resultat: Studien visade att manliga sjuksköterskan tyckte att upplevelsen skilde sig åt beroende på vilken avdelning de befann sig på. Gemensamt var att det upplevts problematiskt vid kontakten med patienter och stereotyper som fanns i samhället. Stereotyper som fanns i samhället har påverkat män som sjuksköterskor, så att de blev osäkra i sin roll som sjuksköterska och därmed sökte sig till avdelningar som ansågs mer maskulina. Medan det intima vårdarbetet på män och kvinnor ledde till olika strategier som manliga sjuksköterskor använt sig av för att undvika att bli sexuellt anklagad eller associerad med homosexualitet. Konklusion: Den manliga sjuksköterskan upplevde olika problem inom yrket på grund av olika stereotyper som de stötte på. Stereotyper ledde till att män sökte sig till andra män inom yrket och att strategier tillämpades för att undvika problem som tillkom vid dessa stereotyper.

Background: The profession of nurse has, from a historical perspective, been seen as something feminine where the profession is linked to the female gender. When more men begun to study to become nurses, new situations arose that has not existed since before when only female nurses worked in the profession. Today, male nurses are counted as a minority, since in Sweden they comprise only for 12 percent of the total nurses. Aim: The purpose is to examine the literature on male nurses' experiences of working in a female-dominated profession. Method: A systematic literature review has been used with a qualitative approach where 14 studies have been selected. The studies were found through the databases Cinahl and Pubmed and have been examined based on a review template and analyzed on the basis of meta-synthesis. Results: The study showed that the male nurse differed in the experience in which department they were in. What was common was that, it was problematic when dealing with patients and stereotypes that exists in a society. Stereotypes that existed in society have affected men as nurses, making them uncertain in their role as a nurse and thus searching for departments that were considered more masculine. While the intimate work care on men and women has led to various strategies that the male nurses used to avoid being sexually accused or being associated with homosexuality. Conclusion: The male nurse experienced different problems in the profession due to the different stereotypes they encountered. Stereotypes have led men to seek out other men in the same profession and where different strategies have been applied to avoid problems that arose from these stereotypes
