Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim, with the study, was to examine how the compliance of hand hygiene during venous sampling was in a health clinic in southern Sweden. Background. Each year thousands of patients are affected by healthcare-associated infection, HCAI. The most important and the easiest way to prevent microorganism from spreading is through good hand hygiene compliance. Previous studies show both positive and negative results according to hand hygiene compliance. Method. The study was conducted by 100 observations of venous samplings, executed by healthcare workers, at a health clinic in southern Sweden. Data was collected through a structured protocol based on guidelines, for good hand hygiene, from Vårdhandboken (patient care handbook). Results revealed that the healthcare personnel failed in their hand hygiene compliance before and after contact with patients and in usage of gloves. In 89 % (n=89) of the cases the personnel didn’t disinfect their hands before contact with patients and 76 % (n=76) didn’t use hand disinfection afterwards. Conclusion. Hand hygiene routines, in healthcare settings, should be given greater attention and emphasis than today. This could be achieved with for example more studies and education for the personnel.
