This study aims to focus on the factors that influence professionals’ possibility to work with participation and self-determination. The study will focus on the professionals’ experience towards what they think are factors that favors and prevent the work with the concept towards the individual with disability. People with disabilities and their rights to participate in different environments was changed for the better in the early 1990s when the act on support and service for certain disables people (1993:387) was added. Their rights for an independent life was getting more opportunities by this act. But what does this mean in practice? We have two main issues in our study that we have chosen to focus on. The first one is: How do the staff in the businesses describe self-determination and participation? And the other one is: What experiences do the staff have about working with self-determination and participation? These questions are aimed to highlighting hos the staff experience their work, especially with self-determination and participation, in different circumstances. We found out that several factors that played into the work of the staff. Time, definition and knowledge of the staff are just three factors among others that were discovered that played into the work of the staff.
