För att kunna möta kraven som ställs på dagens hälso- och sjukvård krävs det i sjuksköterskans yrkesroll ett kontinuerligt lärande genom kompetensutveckling. Syftet med denna litteraturstudie var att sammanfatta forskningsresultat angående sjuksköterskans kompetensutveckling. Resultatet visade att sjuksköterskor som genomgått kompetensutveckling kände sig trygga, kompetenta och nöjda i sin yrkesroll. Sjuksköterskans kompetensutveckling gynnade även arbetsgivaren genom att personalen blir engagerad och nöjd och därmed stannade längre på respektive arbetsplats och inom yrket. Faktorer som hindrar sjuksköterskans kompetensutveckling måste analyseras och strategier för kompetensutveckling måste skapas för att kunna säkerställa att kunskapsnivån inom sjuksköterskeyrket håller jämna steg med hälso- och sjukvårdens utveckling.

The registered nurse has to take part of continuing education through competence development in order to cope with the new demands in the healthcare section. The purpose of this literature review was to summarize the findings of studies on the subject of competence development for registered nurses. The result showed that nurses that take part of competence development felt secure and competent and were satisfied with their profession. For the employer the benefit of competence development for the nurses lied in the higher extent of devoted, satisfied personnel that stay longer at their positions and in employment. There were however factors that could disturb the continuing education of the registered nurse and these should be analyzed. There should also be put up a strategy for competence development for postgraduate nurses in order to maintain the level of knowledge that is necessary for keeping up with the demands of the healthcare profession of today.
