Bakgrund: Sjuksköterskor som arbetar med lidande och döende patienter utsätts för stark känslomässig påfrestning. Tidigare forskning visar att sjuksköterskor ofta känner sig otillräckliga i vårdandet av patienterna samt att de saknar stöd från arbetsplatsen för att bearbeta sina känslor. Syfte: Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka sjuksköterskors upplevelser och erfarenheter av att arbeta nära död samt handledningens betydelse som stöd i hanteringen av detta arbete. Metod: Data har insamlats via intervjuer där sex stycken sjuksköterskor på en hospiceavdelning i södra Sverige har intervjuats. En semistrukturerad intervjuguide har använts och datamaterialet har analyserats genom innehållsanalys. Resultat: Resultatet visade att sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter och upplevelser kring död påverkas av olika faktorer så som vilken relation de har till patienten, hur omvårdnaden kring patienten går till samt hur dödsförloppet blir. Handledningen uppfattades som ett viktigt stöd där sjuksköterskorna kunde prata om sina känslor. Den goda gemenskapen och stödet via kollegorna var viktigt i hanteringen av upplevelser i arbetet kring död. Slutsats: Det finns anledning att tro att hospicefilosofin bidrar till sjuksköterskornas positiva erfarenheter av arbetet nära död. Handledning bidrar till ett bra arbetsklimat, god gemenskap och bättre omvårdnad för patienten. Författarna anser att resultatet ger belägg för att handledning är ett viktigt stöd för hantering av påfrestningar i arbetet. Detta torde innebära att handledning bidrar till sjuksköterskors välmående samt på längre sikt minskar risken för utbrändhet.

Background: Nurses who work with suffering and dying patients are exposed to strong emotional strain. Previous research show that nurses often feel inadequate in caring for the patients and they lack support from the workplace to deal with their emotions. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine nurses’ experiences in working close to death and the role of clinical supervision as support in handling this type of work. Method: Data was collected through interviews where six nurses from a hospice ward in southern Sweden participated. A semi-structured interview guide was used and the material was analysed with content analysis. Results: The result showed that nurses’ experiences surrounding death are affected by different factors such as what type of relation they have to the patient, how caring concerning the patient is carried out and the course of events of the death. Clinical supervision was perceived as an important support where the nurses could talk about their feelings. Good fellowship and the support from their colleagues were important in handling the work surrounding death. Conclusion: There is reason to believe that the hospicephilosophy contribute positive experiences for nurses working close to death. Clinical supervision contributes good working environment, good fellowship and better care for the patient. The authors believe the results provide evidence that clinical supervision is an important support for handling strain related to work. This should imply that clinical supervision contribute to the well being of nurses and in the long run decrease the risk of burnout.
