Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Meeting patients who are in difficult situations and are suffering from illness may be complicated and painful. In this literature review difficult situations were defined as patients who have recently received bad news or patients with advanced cancer or COPD. Aim: The purpose of this literature review was to examine the role of the nurse when meeting patients in difficult situations. Method: Ten qualitative and quantitative scientific articles were the basis for this literature review. The databases used to find these articles were CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO. Results: Two categories, comfort and support, were identified. Some examples of comfort are humor, closeness, touching and helping the patient to take part in his or her own care. The supporting role includes allowing for emotional expression, just being there and helping the patient achieving hope. Conclusion: Nurses have a comforting as well as a supporting role when meeting patients in difficult situations.
