Bakgrund: Typ 1 diabetes är en kronisk sjukdom som kräver behandling i form av dagliga insulininjektioner. Årligen insjuknar 30-40 personer per 100 000 invånare i Skandinavien och incidensen för typ 1 diabetes i Sverige har sedan slutet av 1980-talet fördubblats. Om behandlingen av sjukdomen inte sköts ordentligt föreligger det risk för både akuta och framtida komplikationer. Syfte: Att genom litteraturstudie undersöka vuxnas upplevelse av att leva med typ 1 diabetes. Metod: En litteraturstudie där tio kvalitativa artiklar granskats och analyserats. Resultat: En typ 1 diabetiker behöver enligt litteraturstudiens resultat acceptera och integrera sin typ 1 diabetes i vardagen för att kunna hantera sjukdomen. Rädslor för akuta och framtida komplikationer är vanligt och påverkar det dagliga livet. Typ 1 diabetiker anser att stöd av anhöriga underlättade vardagen, men ville gärna hantera sin sjukdom själv. Typ 1 diabetes förväxlas ofta med typ 2 diabetes av allmänheten och detta leder till stigmatisering av typ 1 diabetikerna. På grund av detta känner sig typ 1 diabetikerna skuldbelagda när de äter sötsaker eller drabbas av komplikationer. Konklusion: Typ 1 diabetes är en sjukdom som påverkar flera aspekter i det dagliga livet. Rädslor för komplikationer och att bli dömd av allmänhet och sjukvårdspersonal är en stor del av vardagen. Med kunskap om typ 1 diabetikers sjukdomsupplevelse, kan den personcentrerade omvårdnaden gynnas.

Background: Type 1 diabetes is a chronical disease that requires daily insulin injections. The incidence for type 1 diabetes has doubled in Sweden since 1980. If the disease is not treated properly the type 1 diabetic is at risk of both acute and future complications. Aim: The aim of the study was through literature review examine experiences of adults living with type 1 diabetes. Method: A literature review where ten qualitative studies were reviewed and analyzed. Result: In order to cope with type 1 diabetes, a diabetic needs to accept and integrate the disease in their everyday life. Fears of acute and future complications are common and affect daily life of a type 1 diabetic. They feel that the support of relatives facilitate living with type 1 diabetes, but they want to manage the condition themselves. The general publics often confound type 1 diabetes with type 2 diabetes, which lead to stigma of type 1 diabetics. Because of this, type 1 diabetics often fell guilt when eating sweets or suffering complications. Conclusion: Type 1 diabetes is a disease that affects many aspects of daily life. Fears of complications and being judged by the general public and healthcare professionals were a big part of everyday life. More knowledge of type 1 diabetic illness experience will be benefiting for the person-centered care.
