Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine whether the presence of the police has an impact on the perceived fear of crime and the perceived risk of being subjected to crimes among students at the faculty of Health and society at Malmö University, using quantitative questionnaires. A survey of images in safe and unsafe environments with or without police has been conducted among 114 students. The results show, among other things, that police staff have a positive impact on the perceived fear of crime in already unsafe environments, while in already safe environments they have a negative impact on the perceived fear of crime. In addition, foot patrol policemen contribute to a higher perceived safety and lower perceived risk of crime than car patrol. The study found differences among individuals with different sexes but not among people with e.g. different age or background.
