Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness has increased significantly in Sweden over the past ten years. The increase leads to more police encounters with individuals with mental illness. Quantitative research indicates that police officers feel insufficient in these encounters. How one assesses and manages different types of situations in which individuals with mental illness are involved differs among police officers as well as how one acquires knowledge about individuals with mental illness. Aim: To highlight the police’s experience at work, specifically encountering individuals with mental illness. Method: Qualitative method was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five police officers in the south of Skåne. Results: The participants described how they felt confident in the meeting and said that this largely depends on their experience in the profession as well as in private. However, the participants expressed frustration as to how partly the police, but also other professions, often try to renounce responsibility when it comes to dealing with individuals with mental illness. They also pointed to difficulties in identifying different diagnoses and symptoms because it varies by each individual. Furthermore, the importance of the link between theory and practice in education/further education was raised. The participants also pointed to how valuable the perspective from individuals who had experience with mental illness and encounters with police was in regards to the education about these encounters.
