Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att undersöka hur äldre kvinnor upplever urininkontinens (UI). UI är vanlig hos äldre kvinnor. Antalet äldre inkontinenta kvinnor väntas öka väsentligt fram till 2050. Det är känt att UI-symtomen brukar förvärras med stigande ålder. Fast UI kan vara ett allvarligt problem tycks många kvinnor tolerera och acceptera det förvånansvärt väl. I svårare fall kan UI påverka sömnen och orsaka trötthet och depression vilket kan ha inverkan på familjelivet. UI kan förorsaka isolering eftersom patienten inte vill avslöja sina problem. UI innebär en stor utgift för samhället. Det finns flera sätt att behandla UI: ändrade vanor, bäckenbottenträning, medicinering och operation. En nackdel med denna studie är att ämnet vid UI är smalt och att det är sparsamt med relevant litteratur. Resultat av denna studie visar att varje kvinna är unik och har sitt eget sätt att uppleva UI. I diskussionen relaterade författarna sina egna resultat till teoretisk modell av människans livsrum som beskrivits av Katie Eriksson professor i Finland.

The aim of this study is to explore how elder women experience urinary incontinence (UI). UI is common in elder women. The number of old incontinent women is supposed to increase considerably until 2050. It is known that the severity of UI symptoms usually increases at old age. Although UI might be a serious disorder, many women seem to tolerate and accept it surprisingly well. In more severe cases, UI can have impact on sleep and cause tiredness and depression which might have impact on family life. UI can also be the cause of isolation since the patient does not want to expose her hygienic problems. UI means a costly expense for the society. There are several methods to treat UI: new habits, pelvic training, medicines and surgery. A drawback in this study is that the topic is narrow and that relevant literature is rare. The result of this study is that every woman has own unique experience of UI. In the discussion the authors related their results to theoretical model of life rooms described by Professor Katie Eriksson in Finland.
