Ett flertal av de människor som identifierar sig som transpersoner eller könsöverskridare har beskrivit ett upplevt obehag och rädsla i mötet med vården. De kan ha blivit utsatta för kränkningar, diskriminering eller dåligt bemötande etc. För att förbättra vårdmötet är det därför viktigt att sjuksköterskor redan i utbildningen har fått information om könsöverskridande identiteter och vad det kan innebära. Syftet med studien var att ta reda på om sjuksköterskestudenterna (termin 3-5) anser att Malmö högskola belyser och ger information om könsöverskridande identiteter, samt om studenterna vill ha detta inkluderat i utbildningen. Studien avsåg även få svar på om studenterna anser att ett ökat medvetande kring olika könsidentiteter är viktigt för deras framtida yrkesroll. Undersökningen gjordes i form av en deskriptiv tvärsnittsstudie under våren 2011 på fakulteten för Hälsa och samhälle, Malmö högskola. Urvalet bestod av antalet registrerade sjuksköterskestudenter på termin tre, fyra och fem, som utgjordes av 263 studenter. Totalt ingick 196 enkäter i studien. Kvantitativ analys gjordes Pearson´s chi-square test och kvalitativ data analyserades med narrativ analys. Resultatet visade att Malmö högskola till stor del inte belyser eller tar upp detta ämne i undervisningen trots att det enligt högskolans visionsdokument och åtgärdsplan borde göras. Studenterna tyckte att det var ett viktigt ämne som borde ingå i undervisningen då sjuksköterskan ständigt möter olika slags patienter i yrkeslivet. Vår förhoppning är att denna brist uppmärksammas av lärare så att denna kunskapslucka snarast kommer att åtgärdas. Some people who identify themselves as transgender or gender-breakers testify on discomfort and fear in nursing care. Therefore it is really important that nursing students already in the nursing program have been provided with information about transgender identities and are aware of the importance when meeting a patient. The purpose of this study was to investigate if nursing students (semester 3-5) think Malmö University highlights and provides information on different ways to deal with gender and transgender identities and if this is something the students want to be included in their education. The study also intended to find out if nursing students believe that increased awareness about various gender identities are important to their future profession. To investigate this, a descriptive cross sectional survey study was conducted in spring 2011 at the Faculty of Health and Society, Malmö University. The sample group for the study consisted of the total number of nursing students registered in semester three, four and five. The sample consisted therefore of a total of 263 students. A total of 196 questionnaires were included in the study. Quantitative analysis was performed with Pearson´s chi-square test and the qualitative data was analyzed with narrative analysis. The results showed that Malmö University only partly highlights the topic in the education which does not meet the requirements of the university's current vision document and action plan. The students thought the topic was important and should be included in the education because when in profession they will meet different kinds of people. Based on the lack of information about transgender identities in education, teachers must be informed about this and work out strategies on how to decrease the knowledge gap.
