Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: HIV still poses a major public health problem globally with the highest prevalence in the Southern Sahara in Africa. Today HIV-infected patients are treated with antiviral drugs in industrialized countries where they have access to the medications. Previous research has shown nurses' negative attitudes towards caring for patients with HIV infection and the lack of adequate knowledge on HIV. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine health personnel’s experiences of caring for HIV-positive patients. Method: A literature review with thematic analysis of ten scientific articles with qualitative approach was conducted. Results: Nurses and doctors had experienced challenges, stigma, dedication to their work, stress and burnout and fear when caring for HIV-positive patients. Conclusion: Most experiences that health personnel experienced pointed at the difficulties and consequences of the patients' vulnerability. Despite the negative experiences the staff experienced a passion for their work and a willingness to work with HIV-positive patients because of the developing knowledge and the will to care for a vulnerable patient population.
