Sammanfattning Den här uppsatsen behandlar ett av vår tids viktigaste begrepp nämligen hållbarhet, och närmare bestämt social hållbarhet i svensk stadsutveckling. Hållbarhet inom rumslig utveckling är idag ett väl etablerat koncept men samtidigt svårförstått och i behov av att förtydligas. I dagsläget finns ingen allmänt vedertagen eller väldefinierad metod för att avgöra vad som är, eller bidrar till att nå, en hållbar stadsutveckling. I denna uppsats behandlas olika aspekter av social hållbarhet kopplat till den byggda miljön och belyser de möjligheter och utmaningar som finns inom fysisk planering. Mer specificerat vill jag med denna uppsats belysa hur ett nyplanerat område i Malmö planeras för att bli ett hållbart område ur ett socialt perspektiv. Jag undersöker hur Malmö stad planerar för Norra Sorgenfri, ett gammalt industriområde som nu ska omvandlas till att bli ett föredöme för hållbar stadsutveckling. Genom plan- och visionsdokument samt hållbarhetsrapporter har jag identifierat några huvudbegrepp som kopplas till social hållbarhet; Anslutningar och stråk, grönska, attraktivitet och mötesplatser och till sist mångfald och blandad stad. Min platsanalys tillsammans med min analys utav empirin har sedan visat på både styrkor och svagheter för planeringen av Norra Sorgenfri utifrån en social hållbarhets aspekt.

Abstract This thesis is focusing on one of the most important concepts of our time sustainability, and more precise the term social sustainability in the context of Swedish urban planning and urban development. Sustainability within the urban planning is today a well established concept but at the same time a concept that is hard to fully understand and in need of clarification. There is no current generally accepted and well-defined method for telling what is, or contributes to, sustainable urban development. This thesis addresses different aspects of social sustainability in relation to the built environment and highlights the possibilities and challenges that is imbedded in physical planning. The more specific object of this thesis is to look into how new residential area in Malmö is planned to become sustainable in a social perspective. The area that is of interest in this case is Norra Sorgenfri, an old industrial area of Malmö, that is currently being transformed into what is suppose to be a model for sustainable urban development. I have identified a few key concepts related to social sustainability, through examination of documents and reports connected to Norra Sorgenfri, such as strings, greenery, diversity and attractiveness. My analysis has shown that there are both strength and weaknesses in the planning of Norra Sorgenfri in regards to the social sustainability.
