Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

How statistics are interpreted depends on the graphic design and in which context it is presented. The purpose of this essay is to discover which factors in the design that can affect the interpretation of charts and how similar data sets can be presented and interpreted in different ways. The research approach is qualitative visual analysis and is based on handbooks about information design. Three different charts are analyzed by argument context and graphic design and are interpreted by the conveyed message. The result shows that the three sources draw different conclusions due to differences in the data visualization such as the shape of the reference line, the values and intervals of the axes and their contextual focus. The essay concludes that design of charts can affect the interpretation of data to a high degree, especially combined with an argument context that explained which correlations that were proved.
