Concepts of identity are a way of describing individuals by traits. Most often is it used in connection to ethnicity, gender, religion or sexuality. Naturally, these do not cover the entire spectrum – identity can also be performing the identity of a person in authority, or backgrounding individual identities and gathering them within national identity. In this paper the focus is on Theresa May constructing her own identity as British Prime Minister, and on how she constructs different perceptions of British identity in relation to the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the world beyond.
