This thesis seeks to identify enemy images in the members magazine of the Alternative für Deutschland. It therefore answers the following research questions: What actors are considered to be part of the in-group and which actors are seen as the enemy? How is the essence of the in-group and the out-group defined? What threats are emanating from the out-group? And lastly, how should the in-group respond to the threats of the out-group? The texts will be analysed according to an analytical framework that combines framing analysis with insights on enemy images, social movements and populism. The results show that the AfD is using classical right-wing populist enemy images, which are especially focused on the corruption of the elites and a problematization of the issue of migration. The main enemy of the party are what they term “Altparteien”. The findings of this thesis generate implications for politicians, members of the public (voters), researchers and the Media. The study furthermore contributes to the existing research done on the AfD as well as theory on enemy images, framing and social movements.
