Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study investigates the risk understanding of fire risks in the home of residents in MKB:s student apartments in Malmö and is thus a target group analysis. The study deals with theories of risk perception, planned behaviour, risk and gender, as well as issue involvement and contributes to increase knowledge about attitudes, motivations and practices regarding fire risks and fire safety at home, which in turn can lead to more efficient strategic communication. Through individual in-depth interviews on the subject with residents in four different student houses around Malmö, the study offers a greater understanding of young adults' risk understanding and risk prevention practices. The results partly suggest a lack of awareness and knowledge about the subject, partly a lack of motivation and uncertainty about preventive actions. In cases where preventive practices were taken, such as checking that devices and the like were switched off, they were portrayed as subconscious actions and therefore something that few of the respondents seemed to consider. In cases where the respondent had been, or knew someone who had been, involved in a minor fire-related accident, the respondents expressed themselves in a way that could be interpreted as not ascribing the incident much importance, nor did they seem to perceive the situation as seriously.
