Påverkan genom manipulerade fotografiska bilder

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

I wanted to examine the relationship between a photographer's specific intentions regarding the manipulation of imagery aspects and people's interpretations of these aspects in the photographic images. I let five people individually interpret the eight manipulated images. Aspects of the pictures are linked to theories that tell us what the specific manipulations involved. I worked with Encoding / Decoding model of Stuart Hall which looks at how the receiver interprets the ideological meanings. It allowed me to see that all of the respondents interpreted the images with their own ideas and not in the direction I wanted them to do. Two of the five interviewees also accepted my ideological meaning in three of the pictures, which showed that it can lead people in a specific direction by means of manipulation. One also accepted a message, but then saw that the image was manipulated and therefore rejected the message and also the image. One can not be sure to succeed in manipulating the specific meanings in pictures. With the help of the reception analysis, I have been able to show the process behind how certain meanings through image manipulation is interpreted by people.
